Chapter Ten
Day Four
The morning had started out with some sleepy cuddling and developed into something far more than that. Jessie had packed food and a thermos bottle with coffee into a basket, watching Marsha for any signs that she could have been wrong. Marsha watched her in return, with that little smile. There was no indication that she might want to take back anything that had been said, last night, and today.
The breakfast picnic by the lake wasn’t sheer indulgence. They had planned to go into town afterwards and see if they could talk to the cops, then check if Marsha’s car would be fixed on Monday as promised. As beautiful as their surroundings were, Jessie was looking forward to going home, straightening out her debts and her life in general. Nothing would be the same.
Marsha had insisted on a generous amount of sunscreen to prevent a repeat of yesterday’s mishap. She had also decided to take a swim this morning, and unlike Jessie, she had brought a swimsuit. Jessie enjoyed the sight. It took her a few moments to realize that someone else did too.
“Hey! We meet again.” He greeted her with a bright smile.
“Hi.” Jessie’s reaction was less enthusiastic. She was aware of Marsha’s curious gaze. “You and your friends are having a good time, I take it.” She made small talk. “I like it too. It’s very quiet and private.”
Truth was, she couldn’t wait to get home. Everybody in this town seemed to have witnessed or known about Ron. She’d be less exposed in a city where she’d lived most of her life, go figure.
He seemed to get the message. “I know. I come here every morning, and it’s the first time I find someone else in this spot. I guess the lady in fifteen doesn’t do much outdoor sports. Anyway…Have a good day. I’ll see you around.”
“When did you talk to him?” Marsha asked, maybe just curious, but there was an edge to her voice.
Jessie pulled her cardigan tighter around her, feeling chilled all of a sudden. “He came by yesterday. I think he was in the store that day when Ron…” There was another memory that had flashed on her mind, hours after they’d met here by the lake yesterday. She didn’t want to go there, even though she was well aware of the irrationality of her reasoning. It always came down to Ron, who wouldn’t leave her alone, and Catherine, who had done just that.
“Oh yeah,” Marsha said sarcastically. “I bet that’s the most action people ever got on their vacation here.”
“I didn’t really remember him.” She hadn’t told any lies regarding the important subjects, just little evasions.
Marsha’s expression softened as she no doubt remembered the embarrassing state Jessie had been in. “Not much to remember,” she said. “It’s interesting how many people just stand by.”
“Interesting is a mild way to put it.”
“Yeah.”
“All right. I’ll test the waters, so to speak, and then we can go to town.”
“Okay.”
Jessie lay back on the blanket, watching Marsha walk to the lake.
